St Peters Track & Field Talents Shine at State Titles
The sun shone bright at the Queensland State Athletics Championships over the weekend—perfect, conditions for all athletes gathered at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC). Among the young athletes were 25 St Peters students. All of our students showcased their determination and commitment to their events; broke Personal Bests and records as they went and gave the competition their all.
Events and Results
St Peters Indooroopilly and St Peters Springfield students competed in a range of Queensland State Title events—from Sprints, to Javelin; Shot Put to Long Distance and plenty in between. While representing their Athletic clubs outside the College, they all proved just how effective the motto of Plus Ultra is at St Peters, each pushing themselves Ever Higher.
Of the 25 students at the State Titles, ten placed first, nine placed second and six placed third. Our students had an incredible 40 top eight finishes and the following students either broke PBs or records to place first, second or third in their events.
Kiara C (Year 12)
Springfield Year 12 student, Kiara, competed in the 100m Hurdles and the Shot Put. She took out second place in the Shot Put with a throw of 12.98m.
Hilal D (Year 12)
Hilal sped past the competition, taking out first place in both of her finals—the Women’s 100m and 200m Sprint (Under 18 Years). Hilal ran an impressive 11.66 seconds in the 100m and 24.34 seconds in the 200m.
Ashleigh S (Year 12)
Ash threw big, taking out first place in the Girls Javelin Throw (Under 20 Years). She threw 45.07m!
Leylani V (Year 12)
Springfield’s Track & Field powerhouse competed in an incredible number of events, including: Girls High Jump (Under 20); Girls Long Jump (Under 20); Girls Shot Put (Under 20); Girls Discuss Throw (Under 20); Women’s Shot Put (Open); Women’s Discus Throw (Open); Women’s 100m Sprint (Under 20) and Women’s 100m Hurdles (Under 20).
She placed second in the Girls Discuss Throw (Under 20), with a throw of 43.88m; third in the Girls Under 20 Shot Put (11.98m) and third in the Women’s 100m Hurdles (Under 20) with a run of 16.58 seconds.
Carlos C (Year 11)
Carlos competed in Men’s Long Jump, Triple Jump and 200m. He took out first place in the Triple Jump (13.35m!) and third in the Long Jump (6.52m).
Torrie L (Year 11)
Torrie L has been named the State’s Rising Star after she blazed past her competition, and previous PBs, in the Women’s Open 100m Sprint. Her run of 11.55 seconds made her the youngest Australian to ever win a state Open Sprint title across the country and qualified her for the World Junior Athletics Championships. She also won the Women’s Open 200m Sprint (23.96 seconds), qualifying her for the World Junior Championships in that race too.A recent Courier Mail article stated that, while Torrie’s 100m time is still off the Olympic qualifying time of 11.30 seconds, she is running into the frame for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Kayla N (Year 11)
Kayla competed in the High Jump, Long Jump, 100m Hurdles and Javelin. She took out second in the High Jump, jumping 1.68m, and second in the 100m Hurdles, running 14.79 seconds.
Lucie B-R (Year 10)
Lucie competed in the Girls Javelin (Under 16) finals and took out third place in the Girls Triple Jump (Under 16). She jumped 10.54m in her final.
Steve L (Year 10)
Springfield Year 10 student, Steve, placed an impressive first place in the Triple Jump (12.58m) and also took out second place in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.90m.
Toby S (Year 10)
Springfield student, Toby, was a force to be reckoned with in the Girls High Jump (Under 16). She jumped an impressive 1.71m, taking out the State Title. Toby also competed in the Girls Javelin Throw (Under 16).
Gabrielle S (Year 10)
Gabby gave it her all and stuck the distance in the Women’s 800m (Under 16) and the Women’s 1500m (Under 16). She placed third in the 800m (2:15:41) and second in the 1500m (4:39:14).
Aldora Tuilaepa (Year 10)
Springfield Year 10 student, Aldora, placed 3rd in the Women's (Under 17) Hammer Throw with a distance of (36.48m).
Hayley C (Year 9)
Springfield student, Hayley, took out second place in the Hammer Throw. She threw an impressive 35.54m!
Lachlan K (Year 9)
Lachlan sprinted through his heats to run a time of 53.32 to take 3rd place in the Men's 400m (Under 16). Lachlan also made the Men’s 200m (Under 16) final.
Isabelle P (Year 9)
Issy put in an enormous effort across multiple events. She competed in the Women’s 100m Sprint (Under 15); the Women’s 200m (Under 15) and the Women’s 90m Hurdles (Under 15). She took out the 90m Hurdles, with a run of 13.74 seconds and placed second in the 100m, with a time of 12.58 seconds.
Tristan B (Year 7)
Tristan was one of the youngest St Peters students at the State Titles. He took out first place in the High Jump, jumping 1.65m, and third in the Long Jump, with a jump of 5.00m.
