St Peters Lutheran College Year 5 students raised $8,000 in donations for the ongoing flood relief effort in Townsville. The Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland Division (LCAQD) will help distribute the money through the Australia DisasterRelief Fund. Donations will go towards targeted funding areas such as playground equipment for an Early Learning Centre, clothing and household goods.
Primary students learnt about the flooding in Townsville, while analysing natural disasters, as part of their Unit of Inquiry. As an action of their learning, and with the support of the College’s leadership team, students organised a fundraising day ‘Tenner for Townsville’ to support those affected in the Townsville community. As well as taking the initiative by raising money each child wrote an inspiring message of hope for fellow Queenslanders.
With the ongoing recovery process “we hope that in some small way the Primary Years community has assisted families, particularly with school aged children like themselves,” says Mrs Pam Carden, Head of Primary Years at St Peters Lutheran College.
During the presentation at the College Chapel, students handed the $8,000 check to the Director of Ministry and Mission, Pastor David Schmidt and CEO of Queensland Lutheran Early Childhood Services, Lyndal Mayer.
“There are some families who are still not back in their own homes because they don’t have one yet. This will go a long way to help that community up there. For them to know that people so far away care about them like this is just amazing and they do appreciate it,” says Lyndal.
“We are grateful for this unconditional love and support being shown to a hurting community,” says Pastor Schmidt.
